The app
The tuner shows nothing — I said no to the microphone.
Tonagi listens through the microphone, so without permission the tuner stays blank and the app tells you so on the tuner screen. Turn it back on in iOS Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone ▸ Tonagi. The tone generator runs on the same audio engine, so it waits for the same permission; the metronome keeps working either way. The sound is analysed on your device and nothing is recorded unless you start a recording.
The tuner seems to react to noise in the room.
Run the guided setup in Settings — it measures your room's noise floor and your instrument, and calibrates the detection to your environment. Do it with the usual background noise present (that's what it's measuring).
Can I use Bluetooth or wired headphones?
Yes. When all the sound goes to headphones — wired, Bluetooth or USB — the tuner keeps listening to you even while the tone generator is playing, because the microphone no longer hears the reference. On the speaker, the tuner would measure the generated tone instead, and the app warns you. The metronome accounts for the small delay wireless audio adds, so the click lands on the beat.
The reading dances on my double bass / tuba / organ.
Turn on Sub-bass, the switch under the instrument profiles in Settings. It doubles the analysis window for the lowest register — double bass, contrabassoon, tuba, harp, organ, the bottom octave of a keyboard — so the reading settles instead of jumping, at the cost of a slightly slower response. It combines with any profile.
What exactly is free, and what are the limits?
Free, forever: the tuner in equal temperament (A 415–446 Hz, transposition, instrument profiles), the tone generator, the metronome with simple time signatures, and Sequences and Routines at demo scale — three sequences of up to eight steps and three routines of three phases, tutorials included. The slots count what you keep: delete an item and its place is free again. Importing files works within the same limits, and exporting one item at a time is always free. Premium lifts the limits and adds the other temperaments, the advanced metronome, Progress, PDF reports, whole-library export and iCloud sync. If Premium lapses you keep everything you made; you just can't create above the free limits until it's back.
Where are my recordings? Are they uploaded anywhere?
On your device — and in your personal iCloud backup if you have iOS backup enabled. They are never transmitted to us or to any server; see the Privacy Policy.
What does iCloud sync carry — and what does it not?
Sync is optional, off by default and part of Premium. When it's on, your study material and settings travel between your devices: sequences, routines, temperaments, metronome presets, your projects and the analysis of your recordings. The audio files themselves never go through the app's sync — they stay on the device and only reach iCloud through your own iOS backup, if you have it on. Everything lives in your personal iCloud account; we have no access to it. A fuller sync — folders, trash and restores kept in step across devices — is being tested with the beta and arrives in an upcoming build.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are handled by Apple: iOS Settings ▸ [your name] ▸ Subscriptions. Both subscriptions start with a 7‑day free trial — cancel before it ends and nothing is charged.
I changed phone, or reinstalled — how do I get Premium back?
Tap Restore purchases — in the app's Settings, under "Others", or at the bottom of the Premium screen — while signed in with the Apple Account that made the purchase. Nothing to type; the App Store confirms it.
The community library
Do I need an account?
Browsing and downloading — never. Publishing and liking need one thing: a display name musicians can trust (sign in at your account). To remove it later, see account deletion.
How do I report a problem with an item?
Every item page has a "Report this item" form — no account needed. Or write to [email protected].
The .tg files
What is a .tgsequence?
The notes of a sequence — steps of chords or rests that Tonagi plays along with you. When a sequence is shared on its own, the note steps travel with their durations neutralised ("free"): you receive the notes, not anyone's pacing. Rests keep their duration — they are structure of the exercise, part of the notes.
What is a .tgaccomp?
The accompaniment — the pacing of a sequence, step by step: duration, and optionally BPM and time signature per step. Values work by inheritance: a step without its own BPM or meter inherits from the previous step, and the first one, if empty, falls back to the default 4/4 at 80 BPM. Notes and accompaniment travel separately on purpose — here's why.
The app says an accompaniment doesn't match my sequence.
An accompaniment is paired by a fingerprint of the notes, never by file name. If the sequence changed since the pair was exported (steps added, notes edited), export both files again from Tonagi.
Can I upload a whole .tglibrary?
Yes. It unpacks on the upload page into one row per item, and you submit them in groups — untick the rows that belong to a different composer or work and send those in a second round. Every item is still reviewed on its own before it appears.
