Temperaments, reference pitch, transposition, vibrato — the side of intonation that fascinates musicians.
Why temperaments matter
"In tune" is not one fixed point. A melody wants its leading tones leaning high; a chord only locks when its thirds are pure — noticeably away from where a piano puts them; and playing with a piano means meeting it in equal temperament. Trained ears move between these targets all the time. The temperament you choose tells Tonagi which one to hold you to.

Your sound is analysed in real time, on your device. Your audio stays on your device — and, with backup on, in your own personal iCloud. The app sends us no audio and no practice data — no account, no analytics, no ads. The optional community library on this site is the one exception: a basic account (an email and a display name), used solely to publish and like.
